Gum Paste Basics

June 18th, 2010 cricutcakemaster No comments

The Cricut Cake Machine can cut many edible materials. I will describe what I consider to be the Gum Paste Basics. Two of the edible materials I will talk about are gum paste and frosting sheets. The gum paste is sold in 2 lbs tubs and frosting sheets come in multiple colors.

When you are working with gum paste you want to remove a fist sized amount from the tub then warm it in the microwave for no longer then 5 seconds. Be sure to make sure it is not to hot to work with so you do not burn your hands. After making sure it’s not to hot to handle knead the gum paste so that it becomes more easy to work with. You want it to become a soft pliable ball.

Once the gum paste is pliable you want to add your food coloring gels or paste. After you thoroughly mix your coloring in you can then roll it out with a rolling pin. You want to roll it out as thin as you can, about 1 and 1 1/2 millimeters if possible.

When rolling it out you have to put a lot of pressure on the rolling pin because the gum paste will be fairly stiff. In most cases once you start rolling it out you want to finish the process because you do not want to leave gum paste out to air dry. You must cover it in plastic wrap if you stop and then you may need to re-heat before you start the rolling process again. It’s best not to stop until you are finished.

After rolling out the gum paste to a thin sheet then you want to brush a thin coat of vegetable shortnin onto the food safe plastic mat. You want to cover the mat where ever your gum paste is going to be on the mat. You need to place your gum paste on the mat smooth it down with you hands to make it stick to the mat then roll it down with your rolling pin to make sure it is very secure to the mat. You do not want if shifting while the machine is cutting. If gum paste is hanging over the edge then you need to cut away gum past so that it remains in the gray area so that it does not get in the way of the rollers feeding it through the machine.

The Cricut Cake

The inside of the Cricut Cake machine is made of food safe materials. The roller and blade are stainless steel to protect the food. It also contains food grade plastics. The joint in the machine has been sealed so food cannot enter vital parts of the machine. This also lets you easily wipe down the Cricket Cake Machine very easily with a damp cloth to keep it clean.

What is the difference between Gum Paste and Fondant?

June 14th, 2010 cricutcakemaster No comments

Gum Paste will actually harden and will probably be something you won’t want to eat. You will pull it off the cake and set it aside while eating. The fondant is something that you will probably like to eat.

Beginner 101 Cricut Cake Video

June 14th, 2010 cricutcakemaster No comments

Hey girls. I found this really good beginner Cricut Cake Video. It’s good to learn from. I’ve included the text for the hearing impaired below the actual video.

Hello everyone. This is the Cricut Cake machine that I just got in the mail today. I tried to decorate a the top of cookie, something really quick. I will start slow and then build up to doing a cake by myself. I wanted to start by showing you a couple of things about the Cricut cake machine. Everything is very similar to the Cricket Expression except it is food grade which means that it is washable and safe to use for food.

Everything can be wiped down and the stainless steel blade can be thrown in the washing machine.

When your are working with the mat you want put generous portions of shortning on it. In this video I am using gum paste with some cake coloring in it. I beleive that Prov Craft has 14 colors to choose from. I think this is what I heard from CHA. It is a very big pain coloring the gum paste yourselg. It will really be nice and easy when I order it from Provo Craft.

What’s in the Box?

Besides the Cricut Cake Machine you will get the Cakes Basic Catridge. This catridge contains hundreds of designs that will help you design beautiful cakes. YOu will also find the blade assembly, catrdige skirt, 12 x 12 cutting mat, the stanless steel blade basket and the cleaning brush.

Cricket Cake Easy Setup Instructions

Getting the Cricket cake setup to go is very easy. After removing all of the items mentioned above. The first thing you do is peel off the outside sticker, open the doors of the Cricut Cake machine and remove the cardboard inserts. These inserts are to keep things safe during shipping. Now the blad housing can move freely.

You will see a silicon overlay on top of the keypad. Do not remove this, it is to protect the keypad. Next you want to place the blade inside the balde housing. Take the blade and remove the protective cover to expose the blade. On the machine find the blade carriage and unscrew the knob and swing it out toward the right and place the blade inside the blade assembly and screw it back tightly to secure.

You Can Decorate a Cake Like A Professional

June 12th, 2010 cricutcakemaster No comments

The Cricut Cake makes it possible for you to decorate cakes like a professional without the mess hassle or years of training. By using the cricut cake you can decorate cakes in no time at all. The new Cricut Cake machine is creating quit a buzz.

I really like the flex building which widens the things you can do. The cricut cake is the fourth in the cricut family of machines. These four are the Cricut original, Cricut Create, Cricut Expression and the brand new Cricut Cake.

With so many great choices from Provo Craft you have to ask what makes the Cricut Cake different then the other cutters. The Cricut Cake is the same size and shape as the Cricut Expression and it even has some of the same functionality. You can use the same cartridges because it’s a catridge based system. It’s compatible with the Gypsy, Design Studio and Cricut Jukebox.

Provo Craft has put a lot of thought in the design of the Cricut Cake. They wanted their current Cricut users to be able to use the cricut cartridges and accesseries. This means you can have thousands of choices in your cake decorating.
